Classes

Published by Erik

The easiest way to take a class is to see what options are on this site, then call or email us and we’ll schedule a time and place. If you don’t see exactly what you want, we might be able to make a custom class for you.

Private classes:

These classes are the best way to get individualized training on whatever bike interest you have. Often these classes cover everything from fitting a bike, to riding skills to fixing the bike. They are the best way to get our focused support to help you meet your individual biking goals. They are also our favorite because they allow us to provide the best student / teacher ratio possible and allow clients to move at their own pace and in their own direction.

Group Classes:

3 hour classes that come to your location:
(4 person minimum)

  • Meet Your Bike
  • Roadside Repair
  • Gear Up
  • Custom Class of your design

What you can expect :
You can expect to have fun and learn a lot. We are committed to teaching our classes starting at your level of knowledge. If you are just starting to maintain your bike, Meet your Bike and Roadside Repair are carefully crafted classes that will cover the topics we see people needing most often in the beginning. They will teach you what the parts are, what they do, how to prevent roadside repairs and how to fix several of them too.

There are also custom classes available. If your goal is to learn to change a flat and fix an annoying squeaky brake, we will focus on that. If you only want to true wheels and rebuild your headset, that’s what we can do. Just tell us what you are after and we will make a custom class. All our classes are very hands-on with props and examples.

You can expect a class of your peers.
It’s important for us to have a class of students at similar levels of expertise. Our standard classes achieve this by design. Beyond that, we also offer all our classes as women-only or coed, by request. We encourage groups of friends to sign up together for a class too. Remember, class size is limited to 6!

You can expect a knowledgeable and friendly instructor: Our motto is Empowering People One Bike at a Time. Erik West is the owner and primary instructor of the Bicycle Workshop. And even though he has ten years experience as a mechanic and another eight as a teacher, we are not here to show you what we know. Instead we are here to help you learn what you want to learn. Our strength is our ability to reach people and communicate ideas, while letting them take stock in their own skills. Whatever your learning style, we can probably meet your needs. Most of our classes center around hands-on, visual and spoken instruction with the support of written and trial and error opportunities. No two classes are exactly alike. We base success on how much better you feel about about your bike and/or riding abilities when the class is over.

You can expect us to ask you some questions too:
We will ask you how you learn best, what you want to learn and how much time you have. We will ask you what you ride, how you ride it, if you have any existing problems with your bike and what your goals are. And most importantly, we will ask you how you will know if the class is successful. This way, we all know what to expect so you can meet your goal.

You can expect to get dirty, if you want to:
Some maintenance classes will get you a little greasy. We usually ask you to wear comfortable clothes you can either ride or get messy in. How messy you get is up to you, but it pays to leave your new white shirt at home!
