Intro to Brake and Gear adjustments

Published by Erik

This class will show you how your bike’s drivetrain and brakes work and how to adjust and maintain them. You will learn about the different shifter types and designs, how they should be maintained, what parts should be replaced and how often, how to adjust them on the side of the road (or while riding in some cases), what tools they require and how long they should last.

When it comes to brakes, we’ll cover different types of brakes, how to adjust them, replace the pads, cables, housing, etc., true your wheels (an integral part to conventional brake systems), how long they should last, how they should feel, what parts to buy and what tools they require. Please note, this class does not cover disc brakes. However, if you have them, that’s fine and if they are mechanical (as opposed to hydraulic), we will cover most of them anyway. Disk brakes are pretty simple.

You will work on your bike and your equipment. Replacing parts on your bike during the class can be very rewarding and is encouraged, as long as you have the right ones. If you want to do this you’ll need to buy them beforehand. We are not equipped to sell you parts, just knowledge. Typically, we consult with people beforehand about the class and can go over any questions you have then. We can help you put together a shopping list of what you’ll want to have.

Time: This class takes 2.5 hours and time flies.

Attire: Dress to make a little mess. Shirts and pants often end up with a fine black tire/brake dust on them and a few grease spots, which don’t always wash out.

Location:
This class requires a place to spread out, usually on the floor or ground. You will probably spend time sitting on the floor.

Preregistration is required
so we know the class is full but not too full. We cap the class at 6 students. However, if two people want to work on one bike, we can accommodate that.  Parents and children 15 and over are welcome.  Since we are parents too, if you come to the class with your child, we will only charge for the child. The accompanying parent is free.
